Weirdo Tunes : Lockdown

Many artists and creatives are using this uncanny and unpredictable time, to hone and own their crafts, especially those within the digital realm and amongst them is Khayelitsha born and bred artist Buhle Qabaka a.k.a “Creative Weirdo”. Buhle is a 3rd year Visual Communications Student and also forms a 1/6 of Cape Town based collective; Apeshit Youth|Aggressively Progressiv.

While watching his favourite cartoon show the Looney Tunes he was inspired to illustrate his very own Looney Tunes themed digital comic series - “Weirdo Tunes” - which features a character design of himself. The series is based around the national lockdown and some relatable and shared sentiments around the lockdown.

Each illustration in the series tells its own anecdote. The first illustration titled “Lockdown” depicts the litany of confusion and puzzlement caused by the uncertainty of which day it is because of basically how monotonous the days have become.

In this illustration, “The Extension”, Buhle depicts a sentiment relatable to many South Africans to the the announcement of the “infamous” extension.

“In Memory Of”: A reminisce of what are now the “good old days”

When asked why he decided to base the body of work around the lockdown the artist says:

“I wanted the comic series to be exactly that, a comic. I wanted to depict my reactions and sentiments around COVID 19, that I believe are relatable to many South Africans classic example; the announcement of the extension. I decided to employ humour with the intention to entertain and somehow help people find sanity. After all, laughter is the best medicine right?"
